The Dades
Valley (Vallee du Dades) is often described
as the "road of a thousand kasbahs"; several
kasbahs along the route are both beautiful
and intriguing. Along most of the route the
river is hardly visible above the ground and
the P32 road follows the plain, which is
flanked dramatically by the High Atlas and
Jebel Sarhro on either side. Oases appear
like mirages in this harsh and desolate
landscape. This is certainly true for Skoura
(30km east of Ouarzazate), one of the most
beautiful oases, with lush vegetation and
kasbahs appearing through the trees.
Following
the road towards Tinerhir. From here it is a
short drive to Todra Gorge. The Todra Gorge
is clearly among the most dramatic sights
you can get across in Morocco. The cut
through the mountain gives at some points
only a 10 metre wide passage beneath 300
metre tall walls.
Sun only accesses the bottom of the gorge,
where a ice-cold river flushes through, in
the morning. Later in the night the gorge
gets its own climate, and while evenings are
damp and warm in the nearest village, they
easily get to be freezing here.
