SIM Card and Internet in Morocco

Staying connected in Morocco is easy and remarkably cheap: a local SIM card costs a couple of euros and mobile data is among the cheapest in Africa. Here is everything you need: where to buy, what it costs, eSIM options and what coverage to expect.

The Three Operators

Mobile operators in Morocco
Operator Good to know
Maroc Telecom (IAM) The historic operator, best rural and mountain coverage - the safe choice for road trips and the south
Orange Maroc Excellent in cities, strong data promotions, English-friendly app
inwi Often the cheapest data bundles, solid urban network

Where to Buy a SIM Card

  • At the airport: operator kiosks at Marrakesh, Casablanca, Agadir and Fes arrivals often hand out free tourist SIMs - you only pay for the recharge. The easiest option.
  • In town: official agencies and thousands of small phone shops sell SIMs for about 20 - 30 Dhs. Recharges ("recharge") are sold everywhere, even in corner shops (hanout).
  • Registration: bring your passport - SIM registration is mandatory, the seller does it in two minutes.

Data Prices (2026)

The rule of thumb across all three operators: roughly 10 dirhams per 1 GB, usually valid for a month.

Typical prepaid data bundles
Recharge What you typically get
10 Dhs About 1 GB of data
50 Dhs 5 GB, sometimes with promo extras
100 Dhs 10 GB and more - plenty for two weeks of maps, WhatsApp and streaming

Note: ask for a "recharge internet" (data-only) rather than a standard credit recharge - the data bundles are far better value.

eSIM Options

All three Moroccan operators now support eSIM - you can get one at their airport or city agencies with your passport. Travel eSIM apps (Airalo, Holafly and similar) also cover Morocco: more expensive per GB than a local SIM, but activated before you land. For stays over a few days, the local SIM remains unbeatable.

Coverage and Wi-Fi

  • 4G everywhere that matters: cities, towns and main roads have fast 4G/4G+. 5G launched in late 2025 in the main cities.
  • Gaps: expect little or no signal deep in the Atlas valleys, in gorges and in the dunes - download offline maps before desert trips.
  • Wi-Fi: riads, hotels and most cafes offer free Wi-Fi of variable quality; a local SIM as backup keeps you autonomous.
  • Calls home: WhatsApp, FaceTime and Skype calls all work normally in Morocco.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a SIM card cost in Morocco?

20 - 30 dirhams (about 2 - 3 dollars), and airport kiosks often give the SIM itself free with a recharge. Data costs roughly 10 dirhams per GB.

Do I need my passport to buy a SIM?

Yes - registration is mandatory. The seller photographs or copies your passport and activates the line on the spot.

Should I get an eSIM or a physical SIM?

For a short stay or if you land late at night, a travel eSIM activated before departure is convenient. For anything longer, a local SIM or local eSIM is several times cheaper per GB.
