Imlil and Mount Toubkal: North Africa's Roof
At 1,740 m in a valley of walnut groves and flat-roofed villages, Imlil is Morocco's little Chamonix: the trailhead for Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa - and a gorgeous mountain day out even if you never aim for the summit.
Just for the Day
- Village-and-waterfall loop: Imlil to Aroumd village and the small cascades - 2 - 3 easy hours with Toubkal views, then lunch on a terrace.
- Tizi n'Tamatert pass: a half-day walk to a saddle with vast valley views and a legendary mint-tea shack.
- 1h30 from Marrakesh - tours, grand taxis and rental cars all work (see day trips guide).
Climbing Toubkal
- The classic 2-day trek: day 1 Imlil to the Toubkal refuges (3,207 m, 5 - 6 h); day 2 pre-dawn summit push (3 - 4 h up scree), descent all the way back to Imlil.
- A guide is mandatory in the Toubkal massif (checkpoint at Aroumd). Licensed local guides charge roughly 400 - 700 Dhs per day per group, plus mule and refuge (dorm + meals about 250 - 400 Dhs).
- No climbing skills needed in summer - it is a long, high walk. Altitude is the real opponent: hydrate and pace.
- Winter (Nov - Apr): crampons, ice axe and winter experience (or a specialized guide) are required - the mountain turns serious.
When to Go and What to Pack
May - June and September - October are ideal (summer works, hot below and busy up top). Nights at the refuge are cold year-round: warm layer, hat and gloves even in August, plus sun protection and solid shoes - cross-check the packing list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a beginner climb Toubkal?
A fit beginner, yes - in summer, with a guide and two days. It is a demanding hike, not a technical climb; respect for altitude and decent shoes matter most.
Do I need a permit for Toubkal?
No permit, but guides are compulsory in the massif and identity checks happen at the Aroumd checkpoint - book a licensed guide in Imlil or ahead online.
