Morocco in January: Weather, What to Do and Tips
January is Morocco's winter: sunny mild days on the coast and in Marrakesh, real snow in the Atlas (and skiing at Oukaimeden), and cold nights everywhere. After New Year, crowds thin and prices drop - a peaceful, atmospheric time to travel.
The Weather in January
| Region | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Marrakesh & inland cities | Sunny but cool 17-20 by day, cold nights around 5-7 |
| The Sahara (Merzouga) | Clear sunny days ~18, near-freezing nights - camps provide blankets |
| Atlas mountains | Snow and skiing at Oukaimeden |
| Atlantic coast (Agadir) | The winter-sun champion: 20-22 and sunny |
| North (Tangier, Fes, Chefchaouen) | Cool and rainy - the wettest region |
What to Do in January
- Chase winter sun on the southern coast
- Ski or play in the snow at Oukaimeden, then return to warm Marrakesh the same day
- Enjoy quiet, atmospheric medinas after the New Year rush
- Clear desert skies for stargazing (wrap up warm)
Events and Crowds
Early January (up to the 2nd) is the tail of the New Year peak; after that it is one of the quietest, best-value months of the year.
This is winter sun, not summer heat: warm days, cold nights, layers essential, and a proper jacket for the desert and mountains.
