Gnaoua and World Music Festival, Essaouira
Once a year, the wind city becomes the world capital of trance: the Gnaoua Festival gathers the greatest maalems (master musicians) of this centuries-old Sufi-rooted tradition - guembri bass, krakebs and call-and-response chants - and throws them into fusion with jazz, blues and world music stars. UNESCO inscribed Gnaoua culture on its intangible heritage list in 2019.
The 2026 Edition
The 27th edition took place June 25 - 27, 2026, with the main stage on Moulay Hassan square by the port, plus intimate concerts in zaouias and riads. The next edition is expected in late June 2027.
Tickets and Access
- The big outdoor stages are free - the square fills with hundreds of thousands of festival-goers over the weekend.
- Paid intimate sessions: the acoustic concerts in historic venues and the "fusion" nights sell passes - book ahead, capacity is small.
- Getting there: Essaouira is 2h30 - 3h by bus from Marrakesh; accommodation sells out weeks ahead for the festival.
Tips
- Arrive a day early: the opening parade of maalems through the medina is a highlight.
- Nights are windy and cool even in June - bring a layer (see what to wear).
- Extend the trip: Essaouira means ramparts, fresh sardines and surf - our city map has you covered.
