Morocco is one of the great camping destinations of Africa - especially in winter, when thousands of European motorhomes migrate south for the sun. Here is what to expect before you pitch a tent or drive your campervan off the ferry.

- Getting there: most vanlifers cross by ferry to Tanger Med from Algeciras - the crossing takes about 1h30 and vehicles enter Morocco on a temporary admission (passport + registration papers).
- The snowbird route: from October to March the Atlantic coast between Essaouira, Agadir, Tiznit and Dakhla fills with long-stay motorhomes chasing 25-degree winters.
- Supplies: butane bottles are cheap and everywhere (adapters needed), diesel is inexpensive, and water refills are easy at campsites and stations.

Is Wild Camping Allowed in Morocco?
There is no blanket right to camp anywhere. In practice: tolerated in remote nature (desert fringes, Atlas valleys) especially with the landowner's or village's blessing - and often the local gendarmerie will simply check on you; avoid it near cities, tourist beaches and guarded zones, where you will be moved on. When in doubt, ask - Moroccans will usually point you to a safe spot or invite you onto their land. Many travelers alternate campsites (for showers and laundry) with the occasional wild night.

- Atlantic coast south of Agadir: winter sun, ocean views, the highest density of campsites in the country.
- The High Atlas valleys: cool summer nights, walnut groves and gorges - perfect tent country around Ait Bougmez and the Dades.
